AMC 8 & Math League Contests 2015

Open to Bainbridge Island students in grades 4-8

The AMC 8 is a challenging 25 question, 40-minute individual multiple-choice contest in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills.
Math League is a fun 30 question, 30-minute individual multiple-choice contest in elementary math problem solving. The contest problems range from simple to challenging. With Math League, all kids should feel successful!

Contest Information for AMC 8 and Math League
Date: Saturday, November 21, 2015, 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM
Location: Bainbridge Independent, 9723 Coppertop Loop, #203
Grade Level: The AMC 8 is designed for middle school students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Highly motivated well prepared 5th grade students are encouraged to participate in the AMC 8 as well. The Math League contest will be a great fit for entry level problem solvers in grades 4 & 5.
Challenge Level: Problems on both the AMC 8 and Math League progress from relatively easy to very challenging.
Cost: Free!

10:00 Check-in and Warm-up
10:10 Contest rules
10:15 Begin contest
10:55 Quite break (look over answers, snack, play games, read a book)
11:30 Award ceremony
11:45 All done
Provided: Scratch paper, graph paper, #2 pencils
Optional: Ruler, protractor, compass, colored pencils. Water bottle, snack, and quiet activity for break time. No calculators. Calculators are not needed for this contest.
Local Awards: All participants receive a contest certificate and a small prize. The top scoring student at each grade level for each contest will receive a special prize.
National Awards for AMC 8:
Distinguished Honor Roll (top 1%). In 2014 this was 23-25 correct out of 25 problems.
Honor Roll (top 2-5%). In 2014 this was 18-21 correct out of 25 problems.
Student Achievement Roll (6th grade and below placing in the top 15%). In 2014 this was 15-25 correct out of 25 problems.

2012 AMC 8 at Commodore
2012 AMC 8 Contest ReportThe 2012 AMC 8 at Commodore was a big success for thirty-nine students in grades 4-8. Students used all the tools at their disposal to solve challenging math problems. Eighth grader Lucas R. earned first place over all with a score of 18. Second place was a tie between eighth grader Thomas A. and fifth grader Matthew M. with scores of 17. Eighth grader Tessa V. (her brother is standing in for the photo), and seventh grader Michaela L., and fifth grader Elijah S. tied for third place all with a scores of 16. Winners within grade levels were also celebrated. Nathan M. was the sixth grade grade-level winner with a score of 12, and Ian C. was the fourth grade grade-level winner with a score of 14. MathLeague, an elementary level contest, was given to first time 4th grade participants, and David B. won the first place award. This year's pizes were Life of Fred math books written by Stanley Schmidt.
